Since I have been on Medium I have read some of the ubiquitous stories about how to be a success on Medium, by which the measure of success is making a lot of money.

The first piece of advise is to publish every day but I like to build a story, which takes me in a direction that I must discover along the way. This involves writing in different moods and restructuring it all into something cohesive. The common amount of time it takes to compose a piece is a week.

So I decided to try Substack. The first piece I wrote was short and complete in the space of a couple of hours. Great! I thought, I can do the short piece on Substack but the next day when I went to compose on Substack I was back to my old discover and construct form and eventually the piece became too long for Substack so I made it into a story for Medium and linked to the story on Substack.

I write a lot about local topics which I felt was holding me back on Medium but the next thing that happened was I learned News Break was favoring local news and so I applied but the wait time is longer than usual. However the auto message says that News break "will get back to you" and not leave one wondering. Shortly thereafter I learned that Substack is also initiating a local news venue, which I also applied for .

In consequence I have been concentrating on local news on Substack where I find I am able to write the short pieces with a consistency that I could not achieve on Medium- and at the same time I am developing a longer piece for Medium, which I can link to from Substack.

I have been keeping my Substack stories exclusive to Substack, which is currently a free newsletter, but eventually I implement the paid subscription. My Substacknews letter is called "Butterflies and Rocketships"

I also publish on Tremr which is not monetized and so is virtually free of "how to make money online" stories.
